Pathways of Structural Transformation

Irrigated and rainfed pathways of rural structural transformation.

Structural transformation — the gradual shift of workers and output from agriculture to industry and services — does not unfold the same way everywhere. This project compares two contrasting rural pathways: irrigated regions, where assured water supports intensification and diversification, and rainfed regions, where households depend on an uncertain monsoon and often turn to migration and non-farm work. By tracing these pathways side by side, the project asks how agro-ecology shapes the pace and pattern of rural change — and what that means for livelihoods and policy.
